Bangkok Dinner Cruises

A dinner cruise is the classic Bangkok evening for couples and families. Choosing the right type of boat matters more than choosing the operator.

A dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya is one of Bangkok's most popular evenings, especially for couples and families. The temples, bridges and riverside hotels are lit up, the air is cooler on the water and Wat Arun glows as you pass. What varies is everything else — the boat, the food, the crowd — and choosing the right type of boat matters more than choosing a particular operator.

Types of dinner cruise

Large buffet cruise ships

Multi-deck boats with a buffet, live music or a show, and hundreds of passengers.

  • Good for: families, groups and a lively atmosphere at a lower price.
  • Less good for: a romantic evening, or anyone who dislikes crowds and loud music.

Smaller boats and converted rice barges

Teak barges and smaller boats serving a set Thai menu at tables, with fewer passengers.

  • Good for: couples and a quieter, more elegant evening.
  • Less good for: budget travellers — expect to pay more.

Luxury hotel cruises

Some riverside hotels operate their own boats with set menus.

  • Good for: special occasions and better food.
  • Less good for: value.

What to check before you book

  • Departure pier and how you'll get there and back. Many cruises leave from the riverside around ICONSIAM, Asiatique or the riverside hotels near Sathorn.
  • Duration: usually around two hours.
  • What's included: buffet or set menu, and whether drinks are included or extra.
  • Window or outside seating: on big boats, the best views are from the open deck.
  • Pick-up: some cruises include hotel transfers.
  • Dietary requirements: confirm in advance.

A typical evening

  1. Arrive at the pier about 30 minutes before departure to check in.
  2. Board and sail at around sunset or shortly after, depending on the cruise.
  3. Dinner is served as the boat heads upstream past the Riverside hotels, the old Customs House area and Chinatown's riverfront.
  4. The highlights: the Grand Palace and Wat Arun lit up, usually the turning point of the route.
  5. Return downstream to the pier, typically about two hours after departure.

Cruises with children

Big buffet boats suit families: plenty of choice for fussy eaters, space to move around and live entertainment. Check the boat has a covered deck in case of rain, and that the timing works for younger children's bedtimes. See Bangkok with kids.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if you want the experience: the river at night, a relaxed evening and views of the lit temples, especially with family or for a special occasion.

Maybe not, if food is your priority. Cruise food is rarely the best meal you'll have in Bangkok.

Cheaper ways to see the river at night

  • Take the public express boat at sunset. It stops running in the early evening, but a late-afternoon ride gives you the golden-hour views for very little. See our Chao Phraya River guide.
  • Eat at a riverside restaurant opposite Wat Arun — the same view, better food.
  • Have a drink at a riverside rooftop. See the best rooftop bars in Bangkok.
  • Stay on the river. Riverside hotels run free shuttle boats in the evening. See our Riverside guide.
