The Khlong Saen Saep boat is a commuter water bus that runs along a canal through the middle of Bangkok, parallel to Phetchaburi Road. It is cheap, it avoids the traffic that clogs the road beside it, and it links the Old Town with Pratunam, Asok and Thong Lo. It is a real commuter service, carrying about 60,000 passengers a day.

It has run since 1 October 1990, over about 18 km of canal, with around 100 boats of 40–50 seats (Wikipedia).

The short version

Best forGetting between Wat Saket, Siam, Pratunam and Sukhumvit without sitting in traffic
FareDistance-based. Operator said 15–25 THB from 7 April 2026 after a 2 THB rise; it moves with the diesel price
PayOn board, in cash
HoursAbout 5:30am–8:30pm on weekdays and to 7:00pm at weekends, per Wikipedia (check at the pier)
Probably not forAnyone with heavy luggage; use the BTS or MRT instead

How the route works

There are two lines that meet at Pratunam pier, so travelling the full length means changing boats there:

  • Golden Mount line (west): from Panfa Leelard, near Wat Saket, to Pratunam. Stops include Saphan Hua Chang, near the BACC, MBK Center and the National Stadium and Siam BTS stations.
  • NIDA line (east): from Pratunam to Wat Sriboonruang, near NIDA. Stops include Chidlom, Nana Nuea (Sukhumvit Soi 3), Nana Chard (Soi 15), Asoke–Petchaburi (near Phetchaburi MRT), Soi Thonglor and Charn Issara, near the Ekkamai Road entrance.
  • Electric extension: a separate line from Wat Sriboonruang to Min Buri district office, on its own timetable, opened in February 2022.

Stops on the Golden Mount line, in order

Panfa Leelard (near Wat Saket) → Talat Bobae (Bobae Market) → Saphan Charoenpol → Ban Krua Nuea → Saphan Hua Chang (BACC, MBK, National Stadium and Siam BTS stations) → Pratunam (change here for the NIDA line).

Paying

Tickets are bought on board, in cash only (Wikipedia). Carry small notes and coins.

Useful journeys for visitors

  • Old Town to Siam: Panfa Leelard (Golden Mount) to Saphan Hua Chang for the BACC, MBK and Jim Thompson House.
  • Siam to Pratunam: Saphan Hua Chang to Pratunam for Pratunam's markets and CentralWorld.
  • Pratunam to Thong Lo: across the city on the NIDA line without a road in sight.

The comparison is our judgement. See the BTS and MRT guide for rail.

What fares do

Canal boat fares are tied to the price of diesel. Family Transport, which runs the service, raised fares from 13–23 THB to 15–25 THB on 7 April 2026 and said it would cut them if diesel prices fell (Nation Thailand, 2 April 2026). We don't know the figure today, so ask at the pier.

When to avoid it

With about 60,000 passengers a day, expect it to be busy at rush hour (roughly 7–9:30am and 4:30–8pm), which is also when the road beside it is slowest. It is a working canal, not a sightseeing boat; if you would rather not use it, take the BTS or MRT instead. See the BTS and MRT guide.

Questions people ask

How much is the Saen Saep canal boat?

Fares are distance-based. The operator said they would be 15–25 THB from 7 April 2026 after a 2 THB rise, and that they move with the diesel price, so ask at the pier for today's fare.

Where do you change boats on the Saen Saep canal?

At Pratunam pier, where the western Golden Mount line and the eastern NIDA line meet.
